| Located at 1400 South Alamo, across from the Pioneer Flour Mill at
Probandt Street, the Blue Star Arts Complex borders the San Antonio
River on the Southern edge of the central business district. The
six-acre Complex sits on the site of the former downtown warehouse
terminal of the MKT (Katy) Railroad. [directions]
The Blue Star Arts Complex is an innovative adaptation of historic
warehouse buildings into an arts-oriented, mixed-use development,
including affordable loft/studio apartments, galleries, retail,
performance spaces, and artists’ work spaces, AND the Blue Star Brewery,
San Antonio's premier micro-brewery!!. The Complex is owned and managed by The
Lifshutz Companies. James Lifshutz developed the property which
was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.
Several nonprofit arts
organizations make the Complex their home including the Blue Star Art Space,
an artist-run, non-collecting, contemporary art museum and Jump-Start Performance Co., a
presenting and producing performance collective dedicated to the
exploration of alternative viewpoints.
